Are you jetting off to the Greek islands this year? If so,
lucky you! There’s so much to do and see. The beautiful Ionian Islands have it
all to offer, from exquisite Greek cuisine, mountainous surroundings, stunning
beaches and dreamy blue seascapes! If you’ve chosen Zante for your holiday
destination this year, you sure are in for a treat. Below we’ve highlighted
five of the top tourist attractions you must visit or experience before
leaving!
The Shipwreck at Navagio Beach
The famous Shipwreck, which lies on the most photographed
beach in the whole of Greece, is positioned on the west coast of the island
under the picturesque village of Volimes. This beach is accessible only by
boat, which adds that extra element of mystery to this famous attraction. The caves and rocks are great for exploring,
and the sea is a beautiful crystal blue. To visit the Navagio beach, catch a
boat from the Porto Vromi port off Volimes in the West!
Zante Town
In the heart of the island lies Zante Town, which has kept
much of the island’s traditional Greek charm. There are a number of stunning old
churches and museums which portray the best of Zante’s historical features. At
the top end of Zante town, Solomos Square marks the main entrance.
From here you can walk up towards San Marco square and onto the main
shopping street of Alexander Roma, filled with many glamorous shops (heaven). The
evenings are particularly attractive in Zante Town, with divine restaurants,
great shopping and a beautiful harbour, all sparkled with traditional Greek
ambience.
Turtles
Zante is one of the rare nesting places for the
Logger-headed Caretta Caretta Turtles, and on various sections of the beaches
you will find these exotic creatures laying their eggs! They may also be found
swimming around the different harbours on the island. They are now an endangered species, so being
able to see them in their natural habitat is very heart warming, and a much
loved experience of people returning to Greece.
Mpohali
Just 2 km from Zante Town, at the top of the hill is Mpohali
which overlooks the port, neighbourhoods and streets. You can take in wonderful views of the town
and port below and all across the Mediterranean Sea. Visit Mpohali in the morning
to enjoy a relaxed breakfast, or by night to indulge in a romantic dinner or
cocktails at the many beautiful lounge bars and tavernas. If you fancy a trip
in the day, visit the Venician Castle!
Shiza
Shiza is a cliff that offers breath-taking views right
across the Mediterranean Sea, and its mountainous surrounding landscape. There
is a steep drive up to the top of the hill where a magnificent cross memorial
stands in remembrance of those who died in the Greek civil war. Once you have
reached the top, you will find yourself an amazing 300 metres above sea
level. If you get there just before sun
set, you will witness the suns slow decent past the landscapes and eventually
below the Mediterranean. The magical view can be enjoyed over a delicious meal
from the friendly tavernas located at the top.
